Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, this natural and untouched wonder covers a total area of about 580 km2. A part of Kien Giang province, the district of Phu Quoc includes the island itself and 105 wonderful islets of all sizes. Phu Quoc Island boasts idyllic beaches, romantic sunsets, evergreen forests, and a serene atmosphere, making it an ideal holiday destination for travellers looking to escape bustling city life.

The island has a roughly triangular shape with a north-south length of 50km and a west-east width of 25 km. A great part of the terrain is filled with beautiful sandy beaches, but there is a mountainous region with 99 peaks, among which the Peak of Chua Mountain is the tallest one at 603 meters. Due to Phu Quoc’s location in the Gulf of Thailand, itsclimate is monsoonal sub-equatorial with a temperate weather all year round, making trips to Phu Quoc possible any time in the year. However, the best time to travel to this island is around November to September in the dry season, when the sky is blue and clear and the rains are away.

Phu Quoc is famous for its two traditional products: fish sauce and black pepper. The rich fishing grounds offshore provides the anchovy catch from which the prized sauce is made. Pepper cultivation is located inland in the center of the island. More recently a pearl farm was established.

From March 2014, Vietnam allows all foreign tourists to visit Phu Quoc visa-free for a period of up to 30 days

  • By air: Ho Chi Minh Tan Son Nhat Airport to Phu Quoc International Airport

Mai Linh, Kumho and Phuong Trang are top three best coaches for visitors to choose. It takes about 7 hours to come to Rach Gia.
At Rach Gia, you should pick up taxi or bike to get to Rach Gia boat station. After arriving this station, you have to get to Phu Quoc Island by Super Dong or Duong Dong Express hydrofoil. It takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to come to Phu Quoc Island

Get around Phu Quoc Island:
For getting around on Phu Quoc Island, you have several possibilities. You can go by taxi, bus, boat, bicycle or motorbike. Renting a motorbike may be your best option for traversing the island’s roads.
Taxi: When you arrive at Phu Quoc International Airport, you are immediately confronted with several taxi offers. Pick one of them. Taxis are available anywhere near a bigger resort, in Duong Dong or anywhere else where tourists tend to accumulate. If not, just ask your friendly receptionist or waitress to call one for you.
  • Mai Linh taxi: (0297) 3 97 97 97
  • Vinasun taxi: (0297) 38 27 27 27
  • Phu Quoc taxi: (0297) 3 75 75 75

  • Bus: The basic bus service that runs between An Thoi and Duong Dong runs every couple of hours, especially when a ferry arrives at An Thoi. Other than that, you will find the signs of bus stops at the roadside of the main streets on Phu Quoc Island
Boat: To get to the smaller islands of the southern archipelago, you need a boat. The best method is to go to the harbor and ask one of the guys with the smaller vessels. Or rather stand there and take a look, they will approach you with a smile.
Approaching the fishermen directly is usually cheaper and more personal.
Bicycle: Often hotels and resorts offer bicycles for their guests. I would definitely recommend that option for riding shorter distances. Always pay attention and lock your bicycle when you leave it behind to explore the one or another interesting sight on Phu Quoc Island.
MotorbikeThat’s the best way to get around on Phu Quoc Island. Especially when you are scouting the area for beautiful beaches and hidden treasures, you will appreciate the mobility of your rented bike. Resorts and hotels usually partner up with a motorbike rental service, so they can organize a bike for you. Just give them an hour or so, and the machine gets delivered to your doorstep
